Ark of the Covenant, a sacred container, wherein rested the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments. The Ark was built at the command of God. the Ark was carried by the priests in advance of the people and their army. The two tablets of stone constituting the "testimony" or evidence of God's covenant with the people (Deuteronomy 31:26) were kept within the Ark itself.
